The BMW PGA Championship, the DP World Tour’s flagship event, tees off Thursday atWentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey. Nestled in the western fringes of London — a 20-minute drive from Windsor Castle — Wentworth will host almost every member of Europe’s Ryder Cup team. Min Woo Lee has strength and accuracy off the tee, and his recent form has been outstanding. He finished T11 at the BMW PGA Championship and T5 at the Open de France, the latter of which he ranked first in the field in driving distance and accuracy.
After a perfect primer in Spain where firm, hard-to-hit greens made it a decent test, the young South African looks among the biggest threats to the big names. I’m wary of what might happen if he’s in contention alongside them, but with Hovland nursing a neck problem, Harman absent for almost two months and Griffin so poor at the Ryder Cup, perhaps Sunday’s leaderboard won’t look quite so strong. Of course, he’s not played it before, but he has an eye-catching record at DLF and while aesthetically unalike, the ultimate test these courses provide is similar. That’s why players like Joost Luiten, Adrien Saddier and Keita Nakajima have gone so well at the new home of the Indian Open and Schaper has produced two of the best tee-to-green performances of his career at that course. The reason he’s had to settle for a host of high finishes and a good statistical profile without looking like winning is that he’s not putted well often enough, but that club has improved throughout each of his last four starts and the result has been ninth in France and fifth in Span. Delhi certainly can’t be overpowered and that makes it an intriguing challenge for these elite golfers, McIlroy in particular.
The 33-year-old is superb at controlling his ball-flight in the wind and this week’s forecast just adds to his chance. Matsuyama’s every visit to the UK and Ireland prior to this week has been for links golf but he does have a couple of notable performances to his name, and remember he earned a bronze medal at Paris 2024 despite mediocre golf coming in. I see no reason why he can’t produce his A-game on this first attempt at parkland golf in England. Well, aesthetically it fits, possibly because courses in his native Japan tend to be densely tree-lined and feature plenty of dog-legs. Secondly, the idea that driver isn’t everything helps as it’s been his weakest club of late, whereas his iron play always has the potential to shine as six top-10 strokes-gained-approach performances since the Masters confirm.

Anything 20s and bigger must be worth taking, the idea that his chance here is similar to when he faced on Rahm, Ludvig Aberg, Tyrrell Hatton and a dozen more quality operators in a much deeper field at Wentworth hard to get my head around.
